Hold Me Back was the oldest song we started that made it onto the EP, it was also the last ones to be completed. The lyrics are about struggling with self control, especially when it comes to alcohol and drugs. It comes from the point of view of an addict who recognises they’re in a downward spiral, but has no control over their actions, or their life in general. This song shows the two sides of substance abuse, with the heavy riffs representing the highs, the soft section reflecting on the lows, and the lyrics exploring this duality of addiction - the acceptance and the denial, the happiness and the depression, the desire to be better and the fear of change.
lyrics
Someone hold me back.
I can’t control myself (I’m f*cking sinking)
Almost like I’m someone else (what am I thinking?)
Learned to live with my mistakes,
I go up but hit the ground like an earthquake.
Is this what I’ve become?
I am the cause of my defeat.
Just a fragment of what I’ve become,
Someone has got to rescue me.
I’ve hidden all my life,
the curse that dwells inside,
I act like I am immortal.
Seen the loved ones lose their trust,
the highs crumble to dust,
but everybody’s got what they’re after.
I’ll never see the end, I can’t even pretend,
One drop away from agony.
Its killing me internally (eternally)
How do I relinquish this curse? I don’t
Is this what I’ve become?
I am the cause of my defeat.
Just a fragment of what I’ve become,
Someone has got to rescue me.
If I can’t run from who I am that just isn’t me.
Cursed from birth and born to die - it’s meant to be.
Those streetlights, they burn so bright,
In the colour of my eyes there’s dynamite.
My skin it crawls away from my integrity.
Someone Hold Me Back… Someone Hold Me.
